Dissolution of the Johor State Legislative Assembly

Yesterday, the Sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar, consented to the dissolution of the Johor State Legislative Assembly to pave the way for the state election, after he granted an audience to Mentri Besar Datuk Hasni Mohammad at Istana Bukit Serene, Johor Bahru.

The Johor state assembly was dissolved yesterday after weeks of speculation and calls from Umno leaders to hold fresh polls. Elections must be held within 60 days of the dissolution, which means polls must take place on or before March 23.

Johor will head into polls in 60 days after monarch Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar agreed to dissolve the state legislative assembly yesterday evening, ostensibly over concerns that the single-seat majority held by the current Umno-led administration would expose the state to political instability.

Johor’s state polls would be the first after automatic voter registration came into force following amendments to the Federal Constitution under the Undi18 drive.

Umno leaders from the state have been pushing for the dissolution, saying the party needs a fresh mandate and a stronger majority to avoid being held hostage by their political rivals.

Pundits believe Umno is confident that it could wrest seats helmed by arch-rivals Bersatu, a splinter group, as well as several of PKR’s seats, optimism likely buoyed by the party’s showings at both the Sabah and Melaka state polls.

Johor is often the springboard state that makes history each time Malaysia arrives at a turning point,  the state’s crucial role in birthing political movements that have come to shape the country throughout its modern history.

Outgoing Johor menteri besar Hasni Mohammad said that Umno, as well as Barisan Nasional could be expected to score huge victories in the election, thus creating a larger majority in the state assembly.

Bersatu, its main Malay rival in the state, which is also the home ground of Bersatu president and former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin.

Muhyiddin Yassin served as Johor menteri besar for nine years (1986-1995) when he was in Umno.

Clash between Umno and Bersatu,  will be a “do or die battle” between the two Malay parties.

Muda, the state elections would be the first for the party co-founded by Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman since it was registered on Dec 23.

Now that the state assembly is dissolved, the people have to fight it out and change the course of history via Johor.

Parti Warisan (Warisan) is still looking into the possibility of contesting in the Johor State Election, said its president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal.

“There are a lot of Sabah, Sarawak folks there (Johor) but we do not just depend on them. We have to assess the situation on the ground and make the decision when the time comes,” he told reporters after Warisan’s dinner event in Likas here last night.

Mohd Shafie said Warisan’s decision to spread its wings to the peninsula last year was crucial in facing the 15th general election (GE) and hoped that it would be held simultaneously with the Johor polls.

“After Melaka, Sarawak and now Johor and maybe other states as well. This is very tiring. If it can be held at the same time as the GE, it will be good and economical,” he said.
